THE PROVINCE OF TRAPANI

1. The salt-pans in Trapani

2. Segesta: the Siculian-Doric Temple

3. The "Giovinetto di Mozia"

The province is situated at the westernmost tip of Sicily, in the south of Italy. It was on the route of the Phoenicians; Ulysses sailed the sea sorrounding the province; it is rich in natural, mythological and archeological beauties.

Interesting touristic aspects of the province:

  • The salt-pans and the salt industry have created an interesting environment of anthropological and economic relevance (photo no. 1)

  • Erice: a fascinating medieval village, also seat of the "Ettore Majorana Scientific Centre".

  • Segesta: famous for its Siculian-Doric Temple of the 5th century B.C. (photo no. 2) and for the Greek Theatre dated to the 2nd century B.C.

  • Mothia: a very small isle in front of Marsala; a very strategic site for the Romans owing to its vicinity to powerful Carthage. One of the most remarkable archeologicalfinds of the last decades, the "Giovinetto di Mozia", can be found in the Museum of Villa Whitaker in Mothia (photo no. 3)

  • Gibellina: after the earthquake in 1968 which completely destroyed the old, small, agricultural centre, the New Gibellina was built. It has become a cultural centre pushed toward a cosmopolitan direction. There we can find the futuristic works of art of Accardi, Quaroni and other distinguished artists; there we can find the huge sculpture "Consagra's Star" ("Stella di Consagra") which is the symbol of the new town.
